With Wine & Seed: Male New Year's Rite Celebrates Dionysus' Rebirth

Year's end (Gregorian Calendar) is a time for many to welcome and embolden the new. Although other traditions have celebrated this marker prior to or differently from January 1st - the modern calendar start of the New Year is a time after the Winter Solstice believed to correlate with the Dionysian Mysteries. This festival coincided with the "clearing of the wine", a final stage in the fermentation process occurring in the first cold snap after the Solstice, when it was declared Dionysus was reborn - vital and virile. This group design is a meaningful observation of this time celebrating fermented wine and ripe seed in a bacchanal of bonding & potency...

"In intoxication, physical or spiritual, the participant recovers an intensity of feeling which prudence had destroyed; he finds the world full of delight and beauty, and his imagination is suddenly liberated from the prison of everyday preoccupations. The Bacchic ritual produced what was called 'enthusiasm', which means etymologically having the god enter the worshipper, who believed that he became one with the god." (Bertrand Russell, A History of Western Philosophy).

Have the following items on site prior to starting:
- Large Horn/Chalice For Dionysus
- A Drinking Horn for each man (may bring own)
- Offerings to Dionysus: musk, civet, frankincense, ivy, grapes, pine, fig, wine, honey, apples, thistle
- Drums

- Torch or ceremonial candle
- Loose clothing, skins and leather garb, cloaks (later to be disrobed)
- Rose petals
- Male pheromone-infused oil

Prior to the celebration, the Circle should have elected one member to represent the role of Dionysus. Typically he should be a special brother chosen for his personal characteristics, prowess, potential ability to portray sexual dramatics and dance skills who preferentially in keeping with tradition may be dark-featured. The group should also select four other members to serve as Satyrs. The group's Priest will lead the proceedings. Four other senior brothers are needed to invoke the corners and one other should be selected as Torch/Candle Bearer for the opening procession.

The celebration starts with a procession which can begin approximately one to one and 1/2 hours (depending on the number of celebrants) before midnight. Those portraying Satyrs beat drums as the circle assembles. All participants gather in the ritual area which should be shaped in a circular fashion. Ideally if the rite can be held outdoors, a circular fire trench may be created. If not, a fire backdrop should be achieved in some way. Celebrants join in the procession lead by the Torch/Candle Bearer while the Satyrs continue to drum. The participants should bring their offerings to Dionysus. When all are gathered around the circle, The drumming quiets and the greeting and offering call from the Priest begins...

Let us open our hearts to the Wild -
Bring thy offerings and objects to be charged with
energy of life to the circle of the great bringer of Ecstasy.
We call to the vine, we call to Earth,
We call to Dionysus to bless us with his presense!

(Drums beat softly as offerings are brought forward)

The first part of the Opening Invocation begins on cue from the Priest

*NORTH - RETURN TO EARTH O GREAT GOD DIONYSUS!
COME AT OUR CALL, SHOW THYSELF TO US.

*EAST - OPEN THE DOOR THAT SETS US FREE
THE DOOR OF DREAMS, BRING US TO THEE.
*SOUTH - GOD OF GRAPES ON THE VINEYARD HILLS WAY
LEAD THY MEN FROM DARKNESS TO DAY-
*WEST - DIONYSUS IS EPIPHANY AND AWAKENING IS HE.
WE CUM, O DIONYSUS, WE CUM TO THEE!

The Priest then recites the "Orphic Hymn For Dionysus" which reads:

"I call upon loud-roaring

and revelling Dionysus,
primeval, double-natured,
thrice-born, Bacchic Lord,
wild, ineffable, secretive,
two-horned and two-shaped.
Ivy-covered, bull-faced,
warlike, howling, pure,
You take flesh, you have feasts,
wrapt in foliage,

decked with grape clusters.
Hearken to my voice, O blessed one,
and with your fine Satyrs breathe on me
in a spirit of perfect agape."

Then the second part of the Invocation Part begins on cue from the Priest:

*NORTH - HARKEN NOW, FOR THE VINE IS BARE
SENSE DIONYSUS', SMELL HIS SCENT IN THE AIR
*EAST - DIONYSUS APROACHES, FOR HE IS NIGH
WITH CROWN OF GRAPE AND LEAN OF THIGH
*SOUTH - EACH BREATH HE FILLS WITH LUST AND LIFE
CARRIED AWAY FROM WORRY AND STRIFE
*WEST - HE IS AROUSED NOW JOIN HIS TRANCE
HE WELCOMES US TO HIS WILD DANCE!

The Priest says:

"LORD OF THE VINE, LORD OF ECSTASY
DANCING FEET BRING JOY AND JUBILEE
GOD OF VISION COME PLY THY SEED
LORD OF THE WINE, THAT DESIRE BE FREED

DIONYSUS IS EPIPHANY AND AWAKENING IS HE.
WE CUM, O DIONYSUS, WE CUM FOR THEE!

HAIL DIONYSUS, HAIL TO THEE!!!
OPEN THY MIND AND SEE THE YEAR'S NEW SEED OF DIONYSUS REBORN FOR THEE"!...
The brother who has been selected to portray Dionysus enters the ritual area naked and erect. He should be adorned with a crown of grapes and vine, a purple shoulder cloak and roman-greco style leather sandals on his feet. His body should be oiled in male pheromone-infused oil. The Satyrs enter around him with fanfare bringing each man their drinking horns. After handing each man a horn they will pour wine into them. The Priest comes forward to Dionysus and presents the large, horn chalice with wine to him.

DIONYSUS SAYS:
"WHO DRINKS with ME?"
ALL SHOUT:
"WE DRINK with THEE!"
At this call all partake of wine. Then the Priest takes back the Large Horn Chalice after he has drank.

DIONYSUS SAYS:
"NOW- WHO SHALL SEED THE NEW YEAR WITH ME"?
ALL SHOUT:
"GREAT DIONYSUS - WE SHALL SEED THE NEW YEAR WITH THEE"
Dionysus then approaches the Center of the circular ritual area and the men respond:

"O GREAT DIONYSUS WHO STIRS THE LOINS AND INSPIRES LIFE-CHANGING LUST. WE SHALL SEED THE NEW YEAR WITH THEE"!

Dionysus takes his place at the center and (potentially surrounded by the fire circle) begins to ritualistically masturbate in what should be a dramatic, erotically choreographed and creative display of overt auto-eroticism intended to spark orgiastic feelings among the brethren. (If you have a circle brother who is a dancer, erotic performer or stripper - this is their chance to shine combining their skills with sexual energy in a venue where there are no restraints). The men, now aroused, disrobe and circle the center. They begin to masturbate lead by Dionysus. They may help each other (touching, stroking) but each man's orgasm should be achieved by his own hand as symbolic of control over his own destiny within the new year.
During this time two Satyrs go around the circle drumming rhythmically and frollicking lustfully while the two others cast rose petals and male pheromone-infused oil on the men of the circle attempting to increase their lust while they masturbate with Dionysus. The climax of the masturbatory circle should be timed as close as possible, to coordinate with the stroke of midnight.

Near 12:00, as Dionysus indicates he is coming close to orgasm, the Priest moves forward with the large horn Calice and the two casting Satyrs return to each man their drinking horns. It is hoped that all or as many of the circle reach orgasm as close to Dionysus' climax and each other's as possible. When Dionysus is ready to orgasm he signals the Priest who then catches his ejaculate in the large horned Chalice. As each man of the Circle reaches climax he too should catch his semen in his drinking horn. All wait until each man has reached orgasm. Then the wine Satyrs come forth and pour wine first in Dionysus Chalice then in each of the men's drinking horns. The Priest lifts the Chalice to Dionysus lips and he partakes of his "seed-wine". The Priest cues the men to raise their horns. He partakes of Dionysus Chalice as each man drinks his "seed-wine" from his own horn.

The drumming Satyrs build the intensity of their beats as Dionysus and the men of the Circle orgasm. The Priest then signals the Baccantae to gather communally around the circle in joyous exhaustion as he concludes the celebration with...

DIONYSUS HAS BEEN REBORN TO MAN.
WE THANK THE VINE GOD, COME AGAIN!

DIONYSUS HAS SEEDED THE VINE BY HAND
WE THANK THEE GREAT GOD, COME AGAIN!

DIONYSUS HAS BROUGHT US AWAKENING
STAY WITHIN THE HEARTS OF MAN!
Dionysus retreats away from the circle while biding farewell and blessing the circle and his Satyrs follow...

ALL SHOUT: HAIL DIONYSUS!
